Penfolds Bin 128 remains one of the purest editions within the Penfolds stable. Firstly, as a Coonawarra Shiraz, it is one of the few Penfolds reds that isn't a multi regional blend. Launched in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of the Coonawarra and the elegant style of cool-climate Shiraz. French oak highlights the pepper, spice and floral characteristics that define this style. Great attention is paid to fruit ripeness for the Bin 128, resulting in the developement of fuller Shiraz flavours, in a wine of style and structure. An awesome table red to mate with duck, game or lamb One of Australia's preeminent red wines. Everything about Bin 707 is large scale. The concentrated essence of physiologically ripe fruit with strong flavours derived from partial barrel fermentation and maturation in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Bin 707 is no shrinking violet, an immensely concentrated style with dark berry/ dark chocolate fruit balanced by well seasoned new oak, plenty of fruit sweetness and powerful, but not overwhelming tannins. Bin 707 builds up into a wonderfully complex and engaging wine A good portion of Cabernet Sauvignon for this year, weighing in at 13%. 1971 created a sensation when it won gold and topped its class at the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris in 1979, beating the best Rhone Valley wines. It also won a trophy, four gold, four silver and five bronze medals at Australian wine shows between 1971 and 1982. "If you had to point to a wine which fulfilled all the ambitions of Grange, it would have to be 1971" said Max Schubert in 1993, "A great wine from a vintage that was great throughout South Australia!" This one-off Special Bin wine was made alongside the 2000 vintage of Penfolds flagship white wine, Yattarna. It follows the successful release of Penfolds Reserve Bin 94A, 95A and 98A - which were all enthusiastically received upon release and have encouraged the continuation of these occasional batch wines. Penfolds Special Bin wines are made to showcase what Penfolds winemakers can achieve when they have access to small quantities of high quality material in superior vintages. Careful selection of grapes from some of the best vineyards in Tumbarumba and the Adelaide Hills. On initial tastings, a highly scented release with good cassis fruit. A cold winter throughout, the wet chilly growing season confounded the Barossa Cabernet, limiting the crop through hailstorm damage. A vintage of adversity for the Penfolds vineyards, nevertheless the yields produced a spine of good Cabernet fruit from which it was determined an excellent ultimate cuvee would be fashioned. Though the finish was originally noted as being quite hard and dry, the wine is characteristically savoury, with cassis, and immensely fine tannins |
