Perennially awarded trophies and golds, Penfolds Grandfather Liqueur Tawny, a blend of the finest old tawnies and aged in small oak casks, honours the proud tradition that is Australia's leading fortified wine. The rich yet delicate fruit character harmonises perfectly with pronounced aged rancio complexity to produce a truly remarkable aged liqueur tawny. Penfolds St. Henri is a counterpoint to Grange, being a highly successful, alternative expression of Shiraz. The label continues to deliver fundamentally super quality wines of great breeding and unmatchable value, a unanimously appealing perfumed style based on fruit definition and seasoned oak. A classy and compelling wine when young, St Henri exhibits the timeless characters of historically classic vintages. Now formative and youthful, it is already completely integrated, with the potential to be a complex, long lived red Bin 707 is the Cabernet Sauvignon equivalent to Grange, crafted from ripe intensely-flavoured fruit, fermented and matured in new American oak, and expressing the Penfolds policy of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. Branded by a Qantas marketer, Bin 707 was first vintaged in 1964. The fruit selected for Bin 707 is subject to stringent quality regimens, sometimes a vintage goes unreleased if Cabernet grapes of the required style and quality are unavailable. Big and long-lived, Bin 707 has a secure place among the ranks of Australia’s great Cabernets Originally received by a grateful follwing as a return to basics, the 2002 was considered to quite possibly be in the league of the great 1990 and 1996 releases. Unique for it's total exclusion of the usual backbone of Coonawarra Cabernet fruit. "Surprisingly supple, without quite the stench of syrupy oak you might expect. It’s fragrant and curranty, and not at all herbal, with soft, powerful fruit, whacks of grapey tannin, a certain calm blackness and an aftertaste that shows the first signs of olivey briar. High class!" -Winefront.com.au Winemaker John Duval called the 1981 a big, tannic Grange. It is just that, a very powerful, inky, purple-colored wine that is still almost primary and unevolved in its surprising youthfulness. This formidably endowed, broodingly backward, thick, full-bodied, muscular wine has a boatload of chocolate-infused plum, caramel, and cassis flavors. With high tannin, huge grip, and some propensity toward austerity, this is a monster Grange that may not totally assimilate the high levels of tannin, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about its future" -Robert Parker Feb 2002 |
