Over forty years Bin 389 has developed a strong identity for its consistency, reliability and value. Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has earned a reputation among wine consumers and collectors as an Australian classic. With all its ripe fruit, richness and generosity, the wine has been much loved over several generations of wine drinkers, 389 is delicious to drink, even when first released. This great and famous wine over delivers on quality, as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, it's a very Australian style of wine with charm and personality

Bin 389 epitomizes the Penfolds winemaking philosophy and the art of multi regional blending. Whilst the regional characters are intertwined, it is ultimately the personality and the structure of the fruit that really matters. Bin 389 is vinified in a traditional manner, the wine is fermented in headed down, stainless steel tanks. Some components of the blend complete fermentation in barrel to enhance the complexity, richness and integration of new oak. The wine is then matured in a combination of new and one to two year old American oak hogsheads for fourteen months prior to bottling, with many of the older barrels having been used for the previous vintage of Grange. Alcohol 13.5%

Deep plum red colour. The nose shows an enticing amalgam of both warm climate Shiraz and cool ripened Cabernet fruit characters. A classic Bin 389 nose with massive fruit, smoky oak and tobacco leaf complemented by floral and vanilla bean notes. Palate is complete, rich and mouthfilling, easily handling the prominent tannins and new oak. The blackcurrant Cabernet fruit is complexed by mouthfilling plum. A full bodied wine exhibiting a large burst of concentrated spicy, plummy Cabernet and Shiraz fruits which hang on the middle palate, leading to a finish that reveals spicy oak, liquorice and packed tannins with lingering flavours of chocolate and fruit. This is a solid Bin 389, ready for hedonistic enjoyment

Penfolds Bin 128 remains one of the purest editions within the Penfolds stable. Firstly, as a Coonawarra Shiraz, it is one of the few Penfolds reds that isn't a multi regional blend. Launched in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of the Coonawarra and the elegant style of cool-climate Shiraz. French oak highlights the pepper, spice and floral characteristics that define this style. Great attention is paid to fruit ripeness for the Bin 128, resulting in the developement of fuller Shiraz flavours, in a wine of style and structure. An awesome table red to mate with duck, game or lamb

Koonunga Hill draws Cabernet and Merlot grapes from praiseworthy vineyards in the McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and the Limestone Coast. The wine makes moderate use of oak maturation to frame the natural structure and flavours of the components, whilst retaining the inimitable Penfold styling. A full flavoured, fruit driven wine, wonderfully forward drinking, Koonunga Hill expresses the clear, bright, fruit and fine grained tannins of the assertive Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the gentle plummyness of the affable Merlot

In essential Australian claret styling, having previously claimed the coveted Red Wine of Year Trophy at the prestigious London International. Sourced from the best vineyards, Koonunga Hill is known for its fully flavoured palate, excellent varietal fruit and well rounded structure. A firm backbone of Shiraz and gentle oak, in a spicey, fruit driven, early drinking style. "Penfolds has been producing the Shiraz/ Cabernet Koonunga Hill for thirty years and it remains an excellent bargain. Heady ripeness, a fleshy mouthfeel, decent acidity!" -eRobertparker.com

Penfolds remarkable winemaking philosophy ensures each vintage of Penfolds Grange has its own vintage character, which continually evolves and surprises. The 2002 is at the other end of the Grange spectral offer to its previous vintage, purely as a result of two very different climatic vintages.100% new oak is completely absorbed, meshed with ripe tannins, completing a palate of impressive length and youthfulness. "The palate is expansive, and yet finessed, balanced, highly defined, sleek. A complete wine, this has been worth the wait!" -Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago

Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

While there will only ever be one Grange, Max’s conviction that the Penfolds approach of sourcing the best fruit from the finest vineyards to marry regional and varietal character to the distinctive Penfolds style, maintaining an unwaveringly high level of quality, lives on in the impressive range of wines.

Considered an undistinguished vintage, it won a trophy, five Gold, four Silver and six Bronze medals between 1974 and 1982. "A good wine from an undistinguished vintage, it certainly was outstanding in June in Adelaide, showing a terrific nose of blackberry jam intermixed with sweet earth, plum, brown sugar, and tobacco. Full-bodied, deep, rich, and fully mature, this layered, concentrated, very fresh wine even exhibited some espresso-infused chocolate in the finish. It should drink well for another 5-7 years" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

Soon after Wine Spectator named Grange 'The Best Red Wine in the World' the price of subsequent vintage releases soared at auction. An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a magnum of Grange from one's own cellar is one of the great wine experiences.
