South Australia is gaining international recognition for producing world class Riesling, with the Eden Valley at the very head of the field. Formulated as part of the evolving Penfold white wine development program, Bin 51 captures the very essence of the Eden Valley Riesling style. The region's high altitude and cool climate produces wines of great complexity and capacity for development. Bin 51 is bottled early to retain freshness, the definitive bone dry Riesling style with bright natural acidity, clear fruit aromas and mouthfilling flavours Offering compelling virtuosity in terms of pure drinkability and potential for cellaring, Bin 389 remains one of the stalwarts of the secondary wine market. The many vintages throughout it's distinguished history are eagerly sought by collectors. The continuity of magnificence in styling has remained unaffected by the development of viticulture, and the expansion of production. Still harmonious, ever seamless in it's expression of fruit and wood, vintage and winecraft, impeccably balanced between the Cabernet and Shiraz, it remains a thoroughly approachable icon wine An unfavourable vintage across most of Australia's winegrowing regions, the best reds this year were made by Penfolds. Extremes of cold and wet, around the country reduced much of the Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of quality and yield. Penfolds managed to creep through the adversities of the vintage, by selectively collating reduced batches from individual vineyards which made the A-grade. A well developed Bin 707, with spicey/ olive/ berry aromas, earthiness, balanced palate, sweet fruit, fine savoury tannins and vanilla oak Grange 1994 represents an excellent offering from an above average vintage. Layers of massive Shiraz fruit and expertly crafted oak manifest themselves. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. "The wine, a blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows some toasty oak mixed with notes of root vegetables, damp earth, blackberry liqueur, prune, and licorice, layered and rich. I would not be surprised to see the rating on this wine improve as this youthful Grange continues to evolve!" -eRobertparker.com Feb 2002 The benchmark by which exceptional red wines in Australia, and increasingly overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many, concentration of flavour, complexity and longevity. Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live to continue developing for decades longer. First produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the 1993 Grange represents over forty years of winemaking excellence. An earlier maturing vintage that's nevertheless rich and concentrated, very scented with apricot/camomile/dark berry/smoky aromas |
