Soon after Wine Spectator named Grange 'The Best Red Wine in the World' the price of subsequent vintage releases soared at auction. An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a magnum of Grange from one's own cellar is one of the great wine experiences.

100% Barossa Valley. Good winter rains and soil moisture levels led to a very good early growing season. Growth was vigorous and flowering was successful however the onset of exceptional heat in January depleted soil moisture, and vineyards without water suffered. Rain in mid-March provided relief and vineyards produced shiraz with excellent, ripe fruit flavours. Ideally suited to Beef, Lamb, Duck & Game, this Grange was aged for 17 months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.5% Acidity: 6.5g/l pH: 3.66

Deep, dark and dense, retaining bright purple hues. The nose is immediately Grange, revealing barrel ferment complexities soaked in dark berried fruits. Vibrant, youthful and lifted, a mix of tightly packed liquorice, freshly tanned leather and dark spices create a poised, controlled and distinctive wine. A rich, full-flavoured and concentrated wine with complex rum/raisin dark chocolate, liquorice, quince paste and dried fruit notes. Prominent, well integrated tannins align with oak (all but soaked up by the fruits) to create a lingering continuum of flavours and tactile persistence. Beautifully balanced, this 100% Barossa wine delivers the expectations demanded of a Grange.

There’s a noticeable cabernet component here (it’s 11% cabernet), giving the flavour profile a noticeable hit of blackcurrant and a more elongated, bony, tannin-driven structure. Still, the palate does come with flights of deep, dense, dark blackberry and crushed ants, and there’s a thick, malty, mentholly hit, particularly on the finish. Again, the striking thing here is the wine’s balance. And with a polished array of supporting flavours: cedar, dark chocolate, Asian-spice and brooding prune, it seems that time could easily do wonders" -Winefront.com.au

Penfolds Grange is an Australian icon, a National Trust of Australia heritage listed wine which captures the essence of Australian ingenuity and innovation. The story of Grange is steeped in the Australian ethos. It is the story of a winemaker who battled against the odds, possessed by the ideal of creating one of the very great wines of the world. The enduring spirit of Grange means that each vintage boasts its own character as the marque evolves and surprises. A seductive, richly concentrated wine, a timeless classic

Intensely spicy, raspberried, honeyed wine – incredibly fragrant – with cedar and cranberry scents frollicking throughout. These characteristics work better on the nose than they do in the mouth, yet still it’s as long and impressive as a freight train. Some will love this wine’s fleshy, warm sweetness, others may find it too oddball – but it’s in fine balance!" -Winefront.com.au, "One of my favorite vintages of Grange to actually drink at present is the 1982. The wine is gorgeously opulent and impossible to resist" -eRobertParker.com

A wine of extraordinary dimension and power, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, Penfolds Grange requires medium to long-term cellaring. With time, it develops into an immensely complex, beguiling wine that seduces the senses. Considered a very successful release from what Max Schubert considered a difficult vintage, 1969 Grange went on to win five Trophies, six Gold, six Silver and two Bronze medals between 1969 and 1975. Bottles from this vintage were labelled with two different Bin numbers 826 and 95

This vintage was seriously affected by drought, and the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires. Summer rainfall was half the average, following by record rains and flooding in March. "Deep brick red with brown edges, this smoky, meaty, cigarboxy and slightly varnishy Grange reveals a powerful bouquet of developed leathery complexity. Tannic, thickly structured and muscular, its deep, briary flavours of licorice, plums and cassis culminates in a drying, lingering finish. A powerful, still rather closed wine with a very long future indeed" -JeremyOliver.com

A very good vintage with a mild growing season, culminating in a burst of warm weather. "Deep dark red. A fresh, youthful aroma of slightly confiture-like blackberries, raspberries and plums is enhanced with sweet vanilla oak. Fresh, youthful and primary, the palate is intense and juicy, finishing fine-grained, elegant and smoky, with lingering flavours of mulberries and cedar. A finer, more elegant and restrained Grange" -JeremyOliver.com, "One of my favorite vintages of Grange to actually drink at present is the 1982" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002
