The 1989 Grange Hermitage is beginning to show some seriously attractive older maturation characters, developing sooner by comparison to its more robust 1988 and 1990 counterparts. 91% Shiraz 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, as well as the McLaren Vale, it has the typical solid structure and strength of character to produce another classic Grange. "Full-bodied, richly flavoured and supremely complex, harmoniously whole, this wine combines power, structure and concentration!" -Winemaker John Duval A meticulous regimen for vineyard selection, coupled with exacting winecraft, ensures each vintage of Grange displays a different character. "The best showing ever for this wine from my perspective, a relatively forward, accessible style of Grange. The color is still a dark plum/purple, and the wine shows plenty of sweet cassis, with notes of chocolate and toasty oak. The wine is opulent and luscious, with great intensity, full body, and fabulous extract. The acidity seems relatively low and integrated, and the tannins quite ripe!" -eRobertParker.com One of the great strengths of Grange is that it does not rely on the performance of a single vineyard. Nowadays, only a few hundred Grange magnum arew bottled each year. 2003 produced Shiraz with dense colour, impressive varietal characters and soft tannins. "A beautifully seductive, richly concentrated wine which evokes the spirit of the Australian landscape, its natural affinity with Shiraz and Penfolds remarkable winemaking philosophy. Australians from all walks of life are extremely proud of this iconic wine and what it stands for!" -Andrew Caillard MW Penfolds renowned 2000 Grange is only the fifth vintage to be made from 100% Shiraz. It is also, atypically, 100% Barossa fruit. While it is not considered to be one of the great Granges, the 2000 exhibits outstanding potential, and is much more accessible than usual. One of the top wines I tasted from this vintage, its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet nose of blackberries. While this is no wimpy wine, it is an ideal example for readers who are unwilling to invest the patience required for the big, blockbuster Granges!" -Robert Parker Oct 2005 At first it presents as remarkably fruity, but the more you look at it the more it seems like an example of highly skilled engineering. It’s a wine of considerable and outstanding finesse, with black and red berry fruit cascading through the mouth. Great structure, and it will get even better" -Campbell Mattinson. "This mouthfilling Grange, a humongous example of a dry red wine, is nearly impossible to match with food, but these wines inevitably become more complex and civilized with ten or more years of cellaring" -Apr 1997 Robert Parker Grange is both Penfolds and arguably Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The first 100% Shiraz Grange since 1963, and an excellent follow on to the "98 vintage. Sourced primarily from the Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard and other Barossa Vineyards, with proportions from McLaren Vale and Padthaway. A fitting Grange release to end the 1900's, with decades of life ahead. |
