Regardless of vintage, Grange delivers fresh fruit in a delicious, clear and explosive style without any overpowering woodiness or unnecessary complexities. "Penfolds, miraculously, have pulled a rabbit out of a hat with this wine. In what was a pretty ordinary year, this is a spicy, peppery, deliciously aromatic wine that, combined with a tangy, gamey palate, makes it seem entirely Rhonish. At its core is a cruise of plum and a sheen of vanilla, and it all comes ushered on smooth, velvet-padded rails!' -Winefront.com.au

Strong yet tempermental grape and deep berry flavours are the hallmarks of Grange, and the Penfolds winemakers have maintained the magic. Grange 2000 is an excellent example of the style transcending a most challenging South Australian vintage. Oak plays a supportive role, perfectly integrated and absorbed. This is a wine of admirable balance and poise. As in most south-eastern districts, some rain fell between Christmas and New Year, followed by very dry and very hot conditions until March. Crops were down by 2 to 40%, yielding exclusive parcels of superior Grange quality fruit in the Barossa. This wine was aged for eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.0% Acidity 6.80g/L pH 3.59

Deep (bright) red crimson in colour. At once a youthful Grange, smoky barrel fermented notes hover above a complex base of black liquorice, tobacco, black pepper, exotic spices and plummy, berried fruits. A wine with trademark mid-palate richness, a mouthfilling, generous and expansive palate. Dark chocolate and plum fruits court a deceptive play of substantial ripe tannins and, at this relatively early stage, provide for a more powerful Grange stamp on the palate than on the nose. "One of the top wines I tasted from this vintage. While this is no wimpy wine, it is an ideal example for readers who are unwilling to invest the patience required for the big, blockbuster Granges!" -Robert Parker Oct 2005

Bottles labelled Bin numbers 71, 72 and 95. "A great Grange, and certainly the best bottle I have had out of four different tastings, this large-scaled Grange showed a huge nose of cigar box, licorice, coffee, mocha, caramel, plum, and currant, and in the mouth, fabulous concentration, plenty of glycerin, wonderful freshness, and superb delineation for a wine that is 35 years of age. A very long finish of close to 40 seconds is also impressive. Pristine bottles should continue to drink well for at least another decade" -eRobertParker.com

Penfolds 1956 Grange is extremely rare - a curio and valuable collector’s item. Well cellared bottles may show fully developed fruit and lacy tannins but most are past their best. A lighter Grange which spent less time (about nine months) in oak and was bottled early. Bottles labelled Bin numbers 14 and 53. The 1956 included a small amount (4 per cent) of Cabernet Sauvignon. From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained it's place as Australia's most prestigious red wine, and one of history's most unique

The pinnacle of Australian reds, Grange represents opulence, vintage 1992 offers great complexity and balance, a powerful and rich release with mouth-coating tannins. No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange. A full-bodied Shiraz wine, fleshed out with a component of exceptional Cabernet fruit, under magnum, the 1992 was destined for a long cellar life. Deep crimson in colour, with smoky/dark chocolate/blueberry/ plum aromas and flavours, fine grained with slightly leafy tannins, finishing very firm and tight

The 1964 Grange claimed a Trophy, four Gold and three other medals in 1968 and 1969. Individual bottles are labelled Bin numbers 95, 395, 66, 67 and 68. "This is a light, elegant style. It almost comes across as a medium-bodied claret style of Grange, with notes of cedar, cassis, licorice, and plum. The wine is medium-bodied with modest alcohol (about 12.8%) and a dark garnet color with plenty of amber at the edge. The wine is balanced, restrained, and believe it or not, quite elegant. Drink it over the next 6-7 years" -eRobertParker.com

Winemaker John Duval called the 1981 a big, tannic Grange. It is just that, a very powerful, inky, purple-colored wine that is still almost primary and unevolved in its surprising youthfulness. This formidably endowed, broodingly backward, thick, full-bodied, muscular wine has a boatload of chocolate-infused plum, caramel, and cassis flavors. With high tannin, huge grip, and some propensity toward austerity, this is a monster Grange that may not totally assimilate the high levels of tannin, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about its future" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

Sourced from Kalimna in the Barossa, McLaren Vale, the Magill Estate and Padthaway. An exceptional vintage in both quality and quantity. "Perfectly profound Grange. As bouncingly youthful as can be imagined – though remarkably approachable too. Gorgeous plum-fruit depth, choc-and-vanilla richness, sumptuous depth and length and a terrific pull of tight, ploughing, statuesque tannins. Impeccable South Australian shiraz!" -Winefront.com.au, "A mighty Grange, syrupy in texture, thick with good fruit and flawless oak, unblemished and refined!" -Vinicraft.com
