A very good vintage with a mild growing season, culminating in a burst of warm weather. "Deep dark red. A fresh, youthful aroma of slightly confiture-like blackberries, raspberries and plums is enhanced with sweet vanilla oak. Fresh, youthful and primary, the palate is intense and juicy, finishing fine-grained, elegant and smoky, with lingering flavours of mulberries and cedar. A finer, more elegant and restrained Grange" -JeremyOliver.com, "One of my favorite vintages of Grange to actually drink at present is the 1982" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002
Predominantly Shiraz with a small amount (6%) of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, Clare Valley, Magill Estate and Modbury near Adelaide, this is a wine with an open-knit, seductive style. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol13.50% Acidity 6.90g/L pH 3.39 "Intensely spicy, raspberried, honeyed wine – incredibly fragrant – with cedar and cranberry scents frollicking throughout. These characteristics work better on the nose than they do in the mouth, yet still it’s as long and impressive as a freight train. Some will love this wine’s fleshy, warm sweetness, others may find it too oddball – but it’s in fine balance!" -Winefront.com.au
Comments by Don Ditter: Very deep, rich brick red. Very ripe, sweet plum jam aromas. Vanilla and mint characters with a hint of leafiness. Masses of delicious super-fleshy fruit throughout, very elegant and supple but undeniably a full-bodied wine with an assertive tannin finish. "A vintage that Max Schubert called, in his low-key manner, "very good." Dense ruby/purple with sweet black raspberry, jammy plum, and currant flavors, the wine tastes like dry vintage port, but also seems to be approaching full maturity. The wine seems low in acidity, sweet in tannin wiith the firmness, ripeness, richness, and powers of seduction. The wine is gorgeously opulent and impossible to resist" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002 |
Penfolds Grange is an Australian icon, a National Trust of Australia heritage listed wine which captures the essence of Australian ingenuity and innovation. The story of Grange is steeped in the Australian ethos. It is the story of a winemaker who battled against the odds, possessed by the ideal of creating one of the very great wines of the world. The enduring spirit of Grange means that each vintage boasts its own character as the marque evolves and surprises. A seductive, richly concentrated wine, a timeless classic Celebrating its 50th commercial release, this wine is only the second in history to be made from 100% Barossa Valley fruit. The premium fruit sourced offers richer fruit flavours and characters, ripe tannins, flavour concentration and greater density. Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago describes the 2001 release as a wine that will last for decades. "The nose is immediately Grange, vibrant, youthful and lifted. A mix of tightly packed liquorice, freshly tanned leather and dark spices create a poised, controlled and distinctive wine, beautifully balanced, delivers the expectations demanded of a Grange!" Though retired, Grange creator Max Schubert was proclaimed Man of the Year by UK Decanter Magazine in 1988. The hallmark of Grange 1988 is it's powerful fruit intensity, dominant length and profound complexity, persistent fruit and oak, reflecting the exceptional quality of the 1988 vintage. "Considered to be an uncharacteristically soft, fruity Grange. Everyone at the tasting agreed. Somewhat soft and accessible for such a relatively young Grange, but there is plenty of structure and tannin in the finish" -eRobertparker.com Feb 2002 A very good vintage with a mild growing season, culminating in a burst of warm weather. When Max Schubert embarked on his voyage of discovery and innovation during the late 1940s, the fledgling wine industry was relatively amateurish and fragmented. Winemaker John Duval's contribution to the evolution of Grange has also been critical. His stewardship has probably seen the greatest developments and innovation in viticulture and winemaking. A remarkable vintage Grange is the 1997, considering it's place between the great 1996 and 1998 editions The benchmark by which exceptional red wines in Australia, and increasingly overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many, concentration of flavour, complexity and longevity. Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live to continue developing for decades longer. First produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the 1993 Grange represents over forty years of winemaking excellence. An earlier maturing vintage that's nevertheless rich and concentrated, very scented with apricot/camomile/dark berry/smoky aromas

The 1991 Grange shocked me with its sweet, forward display of jammy black fruits, smoke, roasted coffee, and copious toasty oak scents and flavors. This mouthfilling Grange, inevitably becomes more complex and civilized with ten or more years of cellaring" -Apr 1997 Robert Parker. "This wine is generous, open, and sweet in its personality. A very lush, open-knit style with full body, high glycerin, low acidity, and superb purity. It is a very jammy, voluptuous wine, dominated by its creme de cassis fruit intermixed with tar and licorice" -Robert Parker Feb 2002 |

While there will only ever be one Grange, Max’s conviction that the Penfolds approach of sourcing the best fruit from the finest vineyards to marry regional and varietal character to the distinctive Penfolds style, maintaining an unwaveringly high level of quality, lives on in the impressive range of wines.
A good portion of Cabernet Sauvignon for this year, weighing in at 13%. 1971 created a sensation when it won gold and topped its class at the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris in 1979, beating the best Rhone Valley wines. It also won a trophy, four gold, four silver and five bronze medals at Australian wine shows between 1971 and 1982. "If you had to point to a wine which fulfilled all the ambitions of Grange, it would have to be 1971" said Max Schubert in 1993, "A great wine from a vintage that was great throughout South Australia!" The 1980 Grange is predominantly Shiraz with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%) from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, the Clare Valley, Magill Estate, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. A generally good growing season with fine and warm conditions, was followed by a cool vintage. "This was a light harvest. A nose of melted asphalt, pepper, creme de cassis, and blackberries changes little in the glass, but with airing, some sweeter plum, prune, and chocolate emerge in a very full-bodied, powerful, seamlessly constructed wine" -Robert Parker
