A very hedonistic, almost decadent style of Grange, gorgeously opulent, almost Pomerol-like Grange with an over-ripe characteristic to the fruit. Cherry liqueur intermixed with cranberry and cassis presented in a seductive, full-bodied, very soft, forward style is truly not the classic Grange in the sense of having huge structure and massive concentration, but this wine is loaded, very corpulent, and fleshy. The wine is going to last for up to two decades, but it will be uncommonly succulent and delicious to drink young!" -eRobertParker.com

The 1989 is already beginning to show some attractive maturation characters and is developing a little sooner by comparison to it's more robust 1988 and 1990 counterparts. 91% Shiraz and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, and the McLaren Vale. It has the typical solid structure and strength of character to age gracefully over the next decade or so, with correct cellaring, to produce another classic Grange. Extreme heat and heavy March rains followed an ideal, warm growing season. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.5%

Winemaker comments by John Duval: Deep plum-red in colour with youthful crimson hues. Features an array of rich, ripe Shiraz characters with masses of ripe blackberry, raspberry, plum and spicy fruit aromas and softer mushroom and earthy hints, complemented by lifted, but integrated, vanillin American oak. A full-bodied, richly flavoured and supremely complex wine with luscious fruit and supple balanced tannins. The palate is fruit sweet, with concentrated blackberry and dark plum flavoured Shiraz fruit and a touch of spice, interwoven with rich vanillin oak flavours

A very good vintage with a mild growing season, culminating in a burst of warm weather. "Deep dark red. A fresh, youthful aroma of slightly confiture-like blackberries, raspberries and plums is enhanced with sweet vanilla oak. Fresh, youthful and primary, the palate is intense and juicy, finishing fine-grained, elegant and smoky, with lingering flavours of mulberries and cedar. A finer, more elegant and restrained Grange" -JeremyOliver.com, "One of my favorite vintages of Grange to actually drink at present is the 1982" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002

Tastings in September 1999 confirmed that the sheer intensity, power and overall balance of 1976 Grange meant it deserved its place as one of the great vintages of the 1970s. "Spectacular; enormous density of fruit with plenty of chocolate and dried fruits; almost port-like. Tannins are velvety and thick; so youthful, so monumental, so massively concentrated; amazing!" -Andrea Immer. "Consistently one of the most awesome wines ever made at Grange, It had a phenomenal showing at Penfolds' Magill estate. A legend for sure! " -Robert Parker Feb 2002

A very great Grange vintage. "Very balanced, long-term Grange. Penetrative and focused blackberry, raspberry and cassis-like fruit. Very sumptuous, youthful and astringent, built on some high quality fruit underpinned by sweetly integrated oak" -JeremyOliver.com, "I have been fortunate to have this wine nearly a dozen times, and I have consistently rated it 96-100. Moreover, the wine is still a baby and ideally in need of another 3-5 years of cellaring. A current as well as future legend, this is a Grange to kill for" -eRobert Parker.com Feb 2002

The 1983 Grange is one of the grandest ever, an exceptional wine and a standout edition from what was otherwise a disastrous vintage across most of Australia's winegrowing regions. Fires, hail, drought and heat, it all happened in 1983. Somehow Penfolds seemed to rise above the adversities of the vintage and produced monumental flagship wines. This Grange stands muscular, powerfully constructed and robust, one of the finest Granges of all time, a great Australian Shiraz with a claim to being one of the finest ever

Penfolds renowned 2000 Grange is only the fifth vintage to be made from 100% Shiraz. It is also, atypically, 100% Barossa fruit. While it is not considered to be one of the great Granges, the 2000 exhibits outstanding potential, and is much more accessible than usual. One of the top wines I tasted from this vintage, its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet nose of blackberries. While this is no wimpy wine, it is an ideal example for readers who are unwilling to invest the patience required for the big, blockbuster Granges!" -Robert Parker Oct 2005

A significant turning point for Penfolds Grange, bottles were labelled Bin numbers 49 and 95, and are now becoming increasingly rare. "A blend of 92% Shiraz and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine showed a dark garnet color with moderate amber at the edge. Notes of prune, mint, coffee, caramel, molasses, and some sweet cherry and berry fruit are present in this full-bodied, intact, succulent Grange that is still fresh, with no traces of oxidation or decay. The wine is round and complex as well as delicious, with full body" -Robert Parker Feb 2002
