The 1991 Grange shocked me with its sweet, forward display of jammy black fruits, smoke, roasted coffee, and copious toasty oak scents and flavors. This mouthfilling Grange, inevitably becomes more complex and civilized with ten or more years of cellaring" -Apr 1997 Robert Parker. "This wine is generous, open, and sweet in its personality. A very lush, open-knit style with full body, high glycerin, low acidity, and superb purity. It is a very jammy, voluptuous wine, dominated by its creme de cassis fruit intermixed with tar and licorice" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

Another great Grange vintage, the 1991 is one of the finest red wines made in Australia, rivalling the highly acclaimed 1990. 95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from exceptional vineyards in the Barossa Valley, including Kalimna, and the McLaren. A warm, dry year with even ripening conditions, vintage began early. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.50% Acidity 7.3g/L pH 3.32. "At first it presents as remarkably fruity, but the more you look at it the more it seems like an example of highly skilled engineering. It’s a wine of considerable and outstanding finesse, with black and red berry fruit cascading through the mouth. Great structure, and it will get even better" -Campbell Mattinson

Comments by Winemaker John Duval: A glorious, dark, dense, red purple colour. The rich bouquet shows an incredible depth of ripe berry spice, tobacco, mocha and green tea aromas with unmistakable Penfolds oak handling. The palate has intensely concentrated, mouthfilling fruit flavours showing spicy, rich berry fruit and earthy characters with masses of ripe tannins and integrated oak, finishing with excellent length. "Classic, exemplary Grange. Briary and perfumed, its heady bouquet of deeply concentrated melange of small berry aromas and fresh flowers . A deeply concentrated yet incredibly stylish, perfectly weighted palate is framed by firm, fine tannins. Exceptional balance and harmony" -JeremyOliver.com

The pinnacle of Australian wines, Grange is always exciting and opulent. "A light, elegant style of Grange made with a blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has a deep ruby/purple color and a spicy, peppery nose with some new oak, black cherry, and blackberry flavors. The wine shows some dry tannin in the finish that may ultimately prove worrisome given the less-than-massive style of this vintage. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to like in this wine, which is very pure, ripe, and medium to full-bodied" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

The wait for this Grange has indeed been worthwhile, arguably the finest vintage since mother nature's endowment of a number of stellar 1990s vintages. Just how good a vintage only time will tell, but all current indicators auger (very) well. Certainly stylistically in the mould of wonderful vintages. "It tastes spectacular. Perfect structure, depth and length. Espresso, crushed ants, blood plums, earth, malt, Asian spice, bay leaf, black tea, pan juices. If you are ever going to buy a new-release Grange, this is the one, 99 points!" -Winefront.com.au

Wine Spectator Red of the Year. History will record 1990 as one of the great Australian vintages of a generation. Grange 1990 was one of the very best to date, with the potential to rival the classic vintages of 1955, 1962 and 1971. A superbly balanced wine, and a very great Grange vintage with tremendous finesse and understated power. "Sweet oak shows prominently – but this is a big wine, and can cope, with its oak only serving as a temperance to all that sweet, saturated fruit. It’s a model of a pristine, powerful, youthful wine!" -Winefront.com.au

One of the great strengths of Grange is that it does not rely on the performance of a single vineyard. Nowadays, only a few hundred Grange magnum arew bottled each year. 2003 produced Shiraz with dense colour, impressive varietal characters and soft tannins. "A beautifully seductive, richly concentrated wine which evokes the spirit of the Australian landscape, its natural affinity with Shiraz and Penfolds remarkable winemaking philosophy. Australians from all walks of life are extremely proud of this iconic wine and what it stands for!" -Andrew Caillard MW

There’s a noticeable cabernet component here (it’s 11% cabernet), giving the flavour profile a noticeable hit of blackcurrant and a more elongated, bony, tannin-driven structure. Still, the palate does come with flights of deep, dense, dark blackberry and crushed ants, and there’s a thick, malty, mentholly hit, particularly on the finish. Again, the striking thing here is the wine’s balance. And with a polished array of supporting flavours: cedar, dark chocolate, Asian-spice and brooding prune, it seems that time could easily do wonders" -Winefront.com.au
