Bottles labelled Bin numbers 59, 95, 456, 59A. "A sensational Grange, this dark garnet-colored wine shows knock-out aromatics of brown sugar, blackberry and currant fruit, with a hint of eucalyptus in the background. Some pepper, coffee, and prune add to the complex concoction. The wine is not a blockbuster, but one of purity, harmony, and actually, restraint, an extraordinarily elegant style of Grange that has aged sensationally well because of its equilibrium. This wine could continue to drink well for at least another 6-7 years" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

A blend of 87% Shiraz and 13% cent Cabernet Sauvignon, the first Grange to be made predominantly from Kalimna (Barossa Valley) rather than Magill (Adelaide) fruit. Also the first and only Grange to use grapes from the cool-climate Adelaide Hills region in the Mount Lofty ranges. After the 1955, this is the second most successful Grange in Australian wine shows with four Trophies and 20 Gold, 10 Silver and three Bronze medals. A copybook season in the vineyard with ideal warm, fairly dry weather and a warm, dry vintage, well cellared bottles with good levels and appearance are invariably drinking well. Maturation for eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 12.20% Acidity 6.90g/L pH 3.64

Winemaker comments by Max Schubert: Deep brick red. A lovely aged wine with complex black berry/ cedar/mocha/smoky/vanilla aromas. An elegantly proportioned palate with prune/ mocha/dark chocoalte fruit and supple/slinky tannins. Superb flavour length and balance. "A superb Grange, with a fullish browning red colour. Classical mature shiraz bouquet of smoke, leather and cigarboxes, with intense, penetrating aromas of vibrant fruit. Perfectly ripened, youthful black and red berry flavours with meaty, smoky undertones present a long, sumptuous and velvet-smooth palate framed by assertive, but silky-fine tannins. Finishes savoury, with lingering prune and currant flavours" -JeremyOliver.com

Wine Spectator Red of the Year. History will record 1990 as one of the great Australian vintages of a generation. Grange 1990 was one of the very best to date, with the potential to rival the classic vintages of 1955, 1962 and 1971. A superbly balanced wine, and a very great Grange vintage with tremendous finesse and understated power. "Sweet oak shows prominently – but this is a big wine, and can cope, with its oak only serving as a temperance to all that sweet, saturated fruit. It’s a model of a pristine, powerful, youthful wine!" -Winefront.com.au

The wait for this Grange has indeed been worthwhile, arguably the finest vintage since mother nature's endowment of a number of stellar 1990s vintages. Just how good a vintage only time will tell, but all current indicators auger (very) well. Certainly stylistically in the mould of wonderful vintages. "It tastes spectacular. Perfect structure, depth and length. Espresso, crushed ants, blood plums, earth, malt, Asian spice, bay leaf, black tea, pan juices. If you are ever going to buy a new-release Grange, this is the one, 99 points!" -Winefront.com.au

The 1983 Grange is one of the grandest ever, an exceptional wine and a standout edition from what was otherwise a disastrous vintage across most of Australia's winegrowing regions. Fires, hail, drought and heat, it all happened in 1983. Somehow Penfolds seemed to rise above the adversities of the vintage and produced monumental flagship wines. This Grange stands muscular, powerfully constructed and robust, one of the finest Granges of all time, a great Australian Shiraz with a claim to being one of the finest ever

Celebrating its 50th commercial release, this wine is only the second in history to be made from 100% Barossa Valley fruit. The premium fruit sourced offers richer fruit flavours and characters, ripe tannins, flavour concentration and greater density. Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago describes the 2001 release as a wine that will last for decades. "The nose is immediately Grange, vibrant, youthful and lifted. A mix of tightly packed liquorice, freshly tanned leather and dark spices create a poised, controlled and distinctive wine, beautifully balanced, delivers the expectations demanded of a Grange!"

A very good vintage with a mild growing season, culminating in a burst of warm weather. "Deep dark red. A fresh, youthful aroma of slightly confiture-like blackberries, raspberries and plums is enhanced with sweet vanilla oak. Fresh, youthful and primary, the palate is intense and juicy, finishing fine-grained, elegant and smoky, with lingering flavours of mulberries and cedar. A finer, more elegant and restrained Grange" -JeremyOliver.com, "One of my favorite vintages of Grange to actually drink at present is the 1982" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002

Grange 1994 represents an excellent offering from an above average vintage. Layers of massive Shiraz fruit and expertly crafted oak manifest themselves. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. "The wine, a blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows some toasty oak mixed with notes of root vegetables, damp earth, blackberry liqueur, prune, and licorice, layered and rich. I would not be surprised to see the rating on this wine improve as this youthful Grange continues to evolve!" -eRobertparker.com Feb 2002
