Bottles labelled Bin numbers 71, 72 and 95. "A great Grange, and certainly the best bottle I have had out of four different tastings, this large-scaled Grange showed a huge nose of cigar box, licorice, coffee, mocha, caramel, plum, and currant, and in the mouth, fabulous concentration, plenty of glycerin, wonderful freshness, and superb delineation for a wine that is 35 years of age. A very long finish of close to 40 seconds is also impressive. Pristine bottles should continue to drink well for at least another decade" -eRobertParker.com

From a great era, and almost certainly a great vintage, the 1966 Grange won four Golds and five other medals at Australian shows between 1969 and 1980. A blend of 88% Shiraz and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon grown at the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, Magill Estate and Morphett Vale in the Adelaide Hills. A fairly dry growing season followed by a warm vintage with near ideal conditions. Maturation for eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 13.40% Acidity 6.10g/L pH 3.76 "Sweet, earthy and creamy, attacks sweet and deep and rich and chewy" -Tim White Sept 1999, "A graceful old wine with pure roasted coffee and gamey aromas, sweet fruit and silken palate" -Anthony Rose Sept 1999

Winemaker comments by Max Schubert: Medium-full brick red. Opulent, coffee/gamey with some chocolate and cedar. Sweet and rich with ripe, gamey/chocolate fruit, some truffly undertones, chewy tannins and excellent length. Finishes a touch dry. "Classic, archetypal Grange with a fully mature red-brown colour. Delicate, ethereal aromas of fivespice and sandalwood open up to reveal an underlay of black cherries, dark plums, prunes and walnuts. Plush and velvet-like, the palate has length and presence, with deep flavours of plums and dark berries interwoven with firm, drying tannins and chocolate/cigarboxy oak. Wonderful balance and harmony, with plenty of time ahead" -JeremyOliver.com

A big, typical Grange and a very good wine from this vintage. Smooth, sumptuous and firmly structured, its deep, long palate of dark red and black berry flavours is wound around firm, but powder-fine tannins" -JeremyOliver.com, "The 1997 Grange looks to be a classic, The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996" -Robert Parker Oct 2002

Sourced from Kalimna in the Barossa, McLaren Vale, the Magill Estate and Padthaway. An exceptional vintage in both quality and quantity. "Perfectly profound Grange. As bouncingly youthful as can be imagined – though remarkably approachable too. Gorgeous plum-fruit depth, choc-and-vanilla richness, sumptuous depth and length and a terrific pull of tight, ploughing, statuesque tannins. Impeccable South Australian shiraz!" -Winefront.com.au, "A mighty Grange, syrupy in texture, thick with good fruit and flawless oak, unblemished and refined!" -Vinicraft.com

The 1995 Grange is the 45th consecutive vintage of the wine that carries the flag for the Australian wine industry. Fruit from the Barossa and the McLaren Vale, the Magill Estate and Padthaway. "An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin!" -eRobertParker.com

Deep plum-red colour. Brooding nose of praline, plum and blueberry. Layered succulent and stylish full oak palate. Earthy fruit flavours of plum and chocolate and very rich chunky chewy tannins. Excellent balance and length!" -Winestate.com, "A massive wine, with cascades of potent plum, cherry and blackberry fruit swirling around wafts of black pepper, bay leaf and exotic spice, which last and last on the finish, hinting at smoky, meaty notes. It's all packed in tightly, suggesting this should evolve spectacularly with age!" -Winespectator.com

Penfolds renowned 2000 Grange is only the fifth vintage to be made from 100% Shiraz. It is also, atypically, 100% Barossa fruit. While it is not considered to be one of the great Granges, the 2000 exhibits outstanding potential, and is much more accessible than usual. One of the top wines I tasted from this vintage, its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet nose of blackberries. While this is no wimpy wine, it is an ideal example for readers who are unwilling to invest the patience required for the big, blockbuster Granges!" -Robert Parker Oct 2005

Grange is both Penfolds and Australia’s most famous wine and is officially listed as a heritage icon of South Australia. An exceptional vintage, 1998 remains a superbly balanced and sumptuous wine, with all the hallmarks of a great, long-living Grange. "The temptation must have been to create a monster, it’s curvaceous but considered. At this early stage complexity, an array of fruit flavours already showing: bright, crushed cranberry, dense blackberry, licorice, raisins, woodspice and a hiss of blueberry, with a spit-and-polish of sweet smoky milk chocolate flavour!" -Campbell Mattinson
