1975 was the year Max Schubert retired from his post as Chief Winemaker, although he remained a consultant to Penfolds and kept an office at Magill Estate. He was succeeded by Don Ditter, who had worked with Penfolds as a winemaker since 1946. Penfolds 1975 Grange won two Gold and five other medals at Australian wine shows between 1976 and 1981. "A very powerful, rich, deep, muscular wine with enormous concentration, plenty of glycerin and sweetness, and remarkable freshness and vigor!" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

Max Schubert retired as Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, but remained involved as a mentor and Winemaker Emeritus for another 20 vintages. Don Ditter, an early graduate of Roseworthy Agricultural College who joined Penfolds as a laboratory assistant in 1946, was appointed by Max Schubert as his successor. An era of considerable technical advances in winemaking, producing a succession of memorable editions up until Don Ditter's Last vintage before retirement, epitomize this remarkable period. Fom the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, and the Coonawarra. A cool summer followed by a mild, dry vintage. Maturation for eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 13.40% Acidity 5.80g/L pH 3.85

A thickly textured muscular wine with plenty of concentration, a dark horse. Winemaker comments by Don Ditter: Colour is a garnet red. Sweet, leather, spice and meaty aromas with some intense liquorice, almost porty nuances. Rich and concentrated with ripe, tobacco/ berry fruit and touches of spice and leafiness. Quite extractive and bitter tannins make the wine a very muscular style. Could soften out. "A blend of 90% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this vintage was considered as a good yet tannic Grange. Certainly the tannins have become beautifully integrated in this sweet, expansive, full-bodied wine, with notes of subtle leather, melted asphalt, blackberry, and coffee" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

Penfolds Grange 1972 won a Gold and four other medals at Australian wine shows in 1973, 1976 and 1977. Originally described by the winemakers as "medium deep brick red in colour, intense liquoric dark chocolate blackberry violet aromas with hints of vanilla spice. A loose knit palate with herbs and camomile, meaty mocha flavours and fine cedary tannins." A single batch was unintentionally oxidized before bottling, resulting in some bottle variation. Otherwise a lovely elegant wine, and a very good Grange vintage

The 1964 Grange claimed a Trophy, four Gold and three other medals in 1968 and 1969. Individual bottles are labelled Bin numbers 95, 395, 66, 67 and 68. "This is a light, elegant style. It almost comes across as a medium-bodied claret style of Grange, with notes of cedar, cassis, licorice, and plum. The wine is medium-bodied with modest alcohol (about 12.8%) and a dark garnet color with plenty of amber at the edge. The wine is balanced, restrained, and believe it or not, quite elegant. Drink it over the next 6-7 years" -eRobertParker.com

The 1989 Grange Hermitage is beginning to show some seriously attractive older maturation characters, developing sooner by comparison to its more robust 1988 and 1990 counterparts. 91% Shiraz 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, as well as the McLaren Vale, it has the typical solid structure and strength of character to produce another classic Grange. "Full-bodied, richly flavoured and supremely complex, harmoniously whole, this wine combines power, structure and concentration!" -Winemaker John Duval

Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

Grange 1994 represents an excellent offering from an above average vintage. Layers of massive Shiraz fruit and expertly crafted oak manifest themselves. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. "The wine, a blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows some toasty oak mixed with notes of root vegetables, damp earth, blackberry liqueur, prune, and licorice, layered and rich. I would not be surprised to see the rating on this wine improve as this youthful Grange continues to evolve!" -eRobertparker.com Feb 2002

Penfolds Grange, blossoms with fifteen to twenty years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. A self-taught, practical winemaker with a natural inquisitiveness for winemaking theory, creator Max Schubert embraced a romantic view of winemaking. Though he retired as Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1973, Max remained involved as a mentor and Winemaker Emeritus for another 20 vintages. 1993 is an earlier maturing vintage under Magnum, kept optimumly cellared
