Tastings in September 1999 confirmed that the sheer intensity, power and overall balance of 1976 Grange meant it deserved its place as one of the great vintages of the 1970s. "Spectacular; enormous density of fruit with plenty of chocolate and dried fruits; almost port-like. Tannins are velvety and thick; so youthful, so monumental, so massively concentrated; amazing!" -Andrea Immer. "Consistently one of the most awesome wines ever made at Grange, It had a phenomenal showing at Penfolds' Magill estate. A legend for sure! " -Robert Parker Feb 2002

An outstanding vintage for the 1976 Penfolds Grange, a final blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the traditional Kalimna site and other Barossa vineyards, the Magill Estate, and Modbury in the Adelaide Plains. A very good growing season with ideal conditions throughout . The warm vintage resulted in big, rich, concentrated wines. Maturation for eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 13.90% Acidity 5.10g/L pH 3.73 "This blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon (13.9% alcohol) was the first Australian wine to cost $20 upon release. I have had this wine six separate times, every time rating it between 96 and 100!" -eRobertparker.com

Winemaker comments by Don Ditter: Youthful purple/red. Intense and concentrated liquorice/ chocolate/ berry/truffle aromas with touches of earthiness. Powerful with rich plum/ chocolate/ berry/ liquorice fruit flavours, thick velvety tannin structure and excellent length. Should be a very long-lived wine. "The color is an opaque purple, the wine massive, full-bodied, and to me, the quintessential Grange. Notes of blackberry liqueur intermixed with cassis, charcoal, new saddle leather, and underbrush resonate from the glass. Huge, thick, unctuously textured, with extraordinary concentration but perfect harmony among all of its elements, this is a prodigious Grange that is still not fully mature" -Robert Parker

A very hedonistic, almost decadent style of Grange, gorgeously opulent, almost Pomerol-like Grange with an over-ripe characteristic to the fruit. Cherry liqueur intermixed with cranberry and cassis presented in a seductive, full-bodied, very soft, forward style is truly not the classic Grange in the sense of having huge structure and massive concentration, but this wine is loaded, very corpulent, and fleshy. The wine is going to last for up to two decades, but it will be uncommonly succulent and delicious to drink young!" -eRobertParker.com

The 1995 Grange is the 45th consecutive vintage of the wine that carries the flag for the Australian wine industry. Fruit from the Barossa and the McLaren Vale, the Magill Estate and Padthaway. "An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin!" -eRobertParker.com

The pinnacle of Australian reds, Grange represents opulence, vintage 1992 offers great complexity and balance, a powerful and rich release with mouth-coating tannins. No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange. A full-bodied Shiraz wine, fleshed out with a component of exceptional Cabernet fruit, under magnum, the 1992 was destined for a long cellar life. Deep crimson in colour, with smoky/dark chocolate/blueberry/ plum aromas and flavours, fine grained with slightly leafy tannins, finishing very firm and tight

Grange is Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. The most powerful expression of Penfolds long and prolific traditions, Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951, and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz with the soils and climates of South Australia. Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz in combination with splendid oak. A unique Australian style, recognised as one of the most consistent of the world's greate wines

Sourced from Kalimna in the Barossa, McLaren Vale, the Magill Estate and Padthaway. An exceptional vintage in both quality and quantity. "Perfectly profound Grange. As bouncingly youthful as can be imagined – though remarkably approachable too. Gorgeous plum-fruit depth, choc-and-vanilla richness, sumptuous depth and length and a terrific pull of tight, ploughing, statuesque tannins. Impeccable South Australian shiraz!" -Winefront.com.au, "A mighty Grange, syrupy in texture, thick with good fruit and flawless oak, unblemished and refined!" -Vinicraft.com

There’s a noticeable cabernet component here (it’s 11% cabernet), giving the flavour profile a noticeable hit of blackcurrant and a more elongated, bony, tannin-driven structure. Still, the palate does come with flights of deep, dense, dark blackberry and crushed ants, and there’s a thick, malty, mentholly hit, particularly on the finish. Again, the striking thing here is the wine’s balance. And with a polished array of supporting flavours: cedar, dark chocolate, Asian-spice and brooding prune, it seems that time could easily do wonders" -Winefront.com.au

While there will only ever be one Grange, Max’s conviction that the Penfolds approach of sourcing the best fruit from the finest vineyards to marry regional and varietal character to the distinctive Penfolds style, maintaining an unwaveringly high level of quality, lives on in the impressive range of wines.

The 1980 Grange is predominantly Shiraz with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%) from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, the Clare Valley, Magill Estate, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. A generally good growing season with fine and warm conditions, was followed by a cool vintage. "This was a light harvest. A nose of melted asphalt, pepper, creme de cassis, and blackberries changes little in the glass, but with airing, some sweeter plum, prune, and chocolate emerge in a very full-bodied, powerful, seamlessly constructed wine" -Robert Parker
