The 1983 Grange is one of the grandest ever, an exceptional wine and a standout edition from what was otherwise a disastrous vintage across most of Australia's winegrowing regions. Fires, hail, drought and heat, it all happened in 1983. Somehow Penfolds seemed to rise above the adversities of the vintage and produced monumental flagship wines. This Grange stands muscular, powerfully constructed and robust, one of the finest Granges of all time, a great Australian Shiraz with a claim to being one of the finest ever

The 1983 Grange is predominantly Shiraz with a small amount (6%) of Cabernet Sauvignon. From the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, Magill Estate, and Modbury in the Adelaide Plains. This vintage was seriously affected by the 1982 drought, less by the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires and March flooding. Summer rainfall was a little more than half the average, following by record rains in March. Maturation in new American oak hogsheads for twenty months. Alcohol 13.30% Acidity 7.10g/L pH 3.41 "Five years ago, it was exhibiting huge, powerful, concentrated flavors, but also high acid and high tannin. Whether it will all come together in a seamless classic remains open to conjecture" -eRobertParker.com

Winemaker comments by Don Ditter: Very deep black cherry red. Dense, powerful dark chocolate spice/plum/ briar and mint aromas with some oak-derived coconut. A highly concentrated wine showing pronounced extract and tannins balanced with sweet plummy fruit and showing some cigar box characters. "Deep brick red with brown edges, this smoky, meaty, cigarboxy and slightly varnishy Grange reveals a powerful bouquet of developed leathery complexity. Tannic, thickly structured and muscular, its deep, briary flavours of licorice, plums and cassis culminates in a drying, lingering finish. A powerful, still rather closed wine with a very long future indeed" -JeremyOliver.com

Penfolds Grange is an Australian icon, a National Trust of Australia heritage listed wine which captures the essence of Australian ingenuity and innovation. The story of Grange is steeped in the Australian ethos. It is the story of a winemaker who battled against the odds, possessed by the ideal of creating one of the very great wines of the world. The enduring spirit of Grange means that each vintage boasts its own character as the marque evolves and surprises. A seductive, richly concentrated wine, a timeless classic

The 1990 and 1991 Granges are regarded by many as extraordinary wines with incredible power and finesse. James Halliday calls this vintage flawlessly supple. In 1990 Grange dropped the Hermitage tag, to align with the name by which it had been known internationally for many years. 95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from Kalimna and other Barossa Valley vineyards, Clare Valley and Coonawarra. A very great vintage with a perfect warm, dry growing season and harvest, yielded a Grange with solid structure and dominant fruit characters

A very great Grange, the mild and relatively dry growing season lead to a very successful vintage. This was the final release crafted by Max Schubert's successor Don Ditter. "A current as well as future legend, this has long been considered by Penfolds winemaking team as the greatest Grange of the 1980s. The wine is fleshy, massively concentrated, multi-dimensional with extraordinary power, beautifully integrated acidity, tannin, and alcohol, that seems to only occur in the greatest vintages. This is a Grange to kill for" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002

Penfolds Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over four decades. An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. An unusually wet (but hot) growing season, the 1979 was sourced from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, the Clare Valley, Magill Estate and the McLaren Vale

Shiraz with a small amount (1%) Cabernet, from the Kalimna and other superior vineyards in the Barossa, Clare Valley and Modbury (Adelaide Plains). A cool to mild growing season followed by similarly good conditions at vintage, with late rain delaying picking. An elegantly structured vintage with blackberry black olive plum flavours, and firm savoury tannins. "Power, balance, intent. Woodsmoke, toffee, coffee, plums, soy – you want more? Ok, you got more – mint, black leather, pure and clean and velvety. Complete wine!" -Winefront.com.au

Don Ditter, who succeeded Max Schubert as Chief Winemaker observed that, "The 1957 and 58 vintages reflect a time when we were unable to purchase and mature the wine in new American oak. In the end, we employed and completed fermentation and maturation in used oak hogsheads. We never quite picked up the same characters. All the same, these are interesting wines and after almost fifty years they are still holding together." Bottles from the 1958 vintage were eventually released as Bin numbers 46, 47 and 49
