No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange. The pinnacle of Australian reds, Grange is a rich, opulent, full-bodied Shiraz, destined for a long cellar life. The winemaking process involves great attention to detail, from selecting the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines, through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation. The 1992 Grange has great complexity and balance, a powerful and rich vintage with mouth-coating tannins

90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage from the Barossa Valley (including the century-old vines of the Kalimna Vineyard) Coonawarra and McLaren Vale. A cool to mild growing season marked by intermittent rains. Grange combines the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of Shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new fine-grained American oak. Partial barrel fermentation takes place at the tail-end of primary fermentation (at 2-3 degrees Baume). It joins the two elements together, producing meaty complexity and roundness of flavours on the palate. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.50% Acidity 7.00g/L pH 3.43

Smoky/dark chocolate/blueberry/ plum aromas. Well rounded, balanced palate with ripe blueberry/plum/dark chocolate flavours and fine grained slightly leafy tannins. Finishes very firm and tight. Comments by John Duval. Deep, dense, dark brick-red with purple crimson hues. The bouquet displays all the distinctive hallmarks of classic Grange - abundant, sweet, ripe berried fruit coupled with balanced integrated oak. As it breathes, the wine reveals alluring tobacco, smoked roasted nuts and concentrated blackcurrant nuances. The palate has intense, sweet, rich fruit with pronounced yet rounded ripe tannins. The wine has excellent structure and integration of spicy, earthy fruit and firm oak, finishing with great length of flavour.

A wine of extraordinary dimension and power, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, Penfolds Grange requires medium to long-term cellaring. With time, it develops into an immensely complex, beguiling wine that seduces the senses. Considered a very successful release from what Max Schubert considered a difficult vintage, 1969 Grange went on to win five Trophies, six Gold, six Silver and two Bronze medals between 1969 and 1975. Bottles from this vintage were labelled with two different Bin numbers 826 and 95

Grange is a unique Australian style, officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. When the late, great Max Schubert embarked on his odyssey to define the nation's ultimate red wine, his efforts were met by adversity and derision from peers. Today Grange is recognised as one of the world's great wines, each vintage is eagerly awaited round the globe. The small 2005 vintage release makes no quality compromise. A Grange that is balanced, firm and polished. The first sip welcomes, the second sip asserts, the third entreats submission

A big, typical Grange and a very good wine from this vintage. Smooth, sumptuous and firmly structured, its deep, long palate of dark red and black berry flavours is wound around firm, but powder-fine tannins" -JeremyOliver.com, "The 1997 Grange looks to be a classic, The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996" -Robert Parker Oct 2002

A very good vintage with a mild growing season, culminating in a burst of warm weather. "Deep dark red. A fresh, youthful aroma of slightly confiture-like blackberries, raspberries and plums is enhanced with sweet vanilla oak. Fresh, youthful and primary, the palate is intense and juicy, finishing fine-grained, elegant and smoky, with lingering flavours of mulberries and cedar. A finer, more elegant and restrained Grange" -JeremyOliver.com, "One of my favorite vintages of Grange to actually drink at present is the 1982" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002

Penfolds Grange 1972 won a Gold and four other medals at Australian wine shows in 1973, 1976 and 1977. Originally described by the winemakers as "medium deep brick red in colour, intense liquoric dark chocolate blackberry violet aromas with hints of vanilla spice. A loose knit palate with herbs and camomile, meaty mocha flavours and fine cedary tannins." A single batch was unintentionally oxidized before bottling, resulting in some bottle variation. Otherwise a lovely elegant wine, and a very good Grange vintage

A meticulous regimen for vineyard selection, coupled with exacting winecraft, ensures each vintage of Grange displays a different character. "The best showing ever for this wine from my perspective, a relatively forward, accessible style of Grange. The color is still a dark plum/purple, and the wine shows plenty of sweet cassis, with notes of chocolate and toasty oak. The wine is opulent and luscious, with great intensity, full body, and fabulous extract. The acidity seems relatively low and integrated, and the tannins quite ripe!" -eRobertParker.com
