The 1989 Grange Hermitage is beginning to show some seriously attractive older maturation characters, developing sooner by comparison to its more robust 1988 and 1990 counterparts. 91% Shiraz 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, as well as the McLaren Vale, it has the typical solid structure and strength of character to produce another classic Grange. "Full-bodied, richly flavoured and supremely complex, harmoniously whole, this wine combines power, structure and concentration!" -Winemaker John Duval

The 1989 is already beginning to show some attractive maturation characters and is developing a little sooner by comparison to its more robust 1988 and 1990 counterparts. 91% Shiraz and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, and the McLaren Vale. A full-bodied, richly flavoured and supremely complex vintage with luscious fruit and supple balanced tannins. It has the solid structure and strength of character to age gracefully over the next decade or so, with correct cellaring, to produce another classic Grange. Extreme heat and heavy March rains followed an ideal, warm growing season. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol 13.50%

Deep plum-red in colour with youthful crimson hues. Features an array of rich, ripe Shiraz characters with masses of ripe blackberry, raspberry, plum and spicy fruit aromas and softer mushroom and earthy hints, complemented by lifted, but integrated, vanillin American oak. The palate is fruit sweet, with concentrated blackberry and dark plum flavoured Shiraz fruit and a touch of spice, interwoven with rich vanillin oak flavours. "Sweet raisiny, aniseedy, confected. Licorice-allsorts – did Dave Powell visit Penfolds during this vintage? Absolutely hedonistic, bitter on the finish maybe but soft and delicious through the palate – a complete crowd pleaser. I am one of the crowd!" -Winefront.com.au

Sourced from Kalimna in the Barossa, McLaren Vale, the Magill Estate and Padthaway. An exceptional vintage in both quality and quantity. "Perfectly profound Grange. As bouncingly youthful as can be imagined – though remarkably approachable too. Gorgeous plum-fruit depth, choc-and-vanilla richness, sumptuous depth and length and a terrific pull of tight, ploughing, statuesque tannins. Impeccable South Australian shiraz!" -Winefront.com.au, "A mighty Grange, syrupy in texture, thick with good fruit and flawless oak, unblemished and refined!" -Vinicraft.com

Despite a difficult vintage, rigorous selection of intensely flavoured grapes from mature vines in some of the finest vineyards produced a wine that exceeded vintage expectations. "An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin!" -eRobertparker.com

A meticulous regimen for vineyard selection, coupled with exacting winecraft, ensures each vintage of Grange displays a different character. "The best showing ever for this wine from my perspective, a relatively forward, accessible style of Grange. The color is still a dark plum/purple, and the wine shows plenty of sweet cassis, with notes of chocolate and toasty oak. The wine is opulent and luscious, with great intensity, full body, and fabulous extract. The acidity seems relatively low and integrated, and the tannins quite ripe!" -eRobertParker.com

The benchmark by which exceptional red wines in Australia, and increasingly overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many, concentration of flavour, complexity and longevity. Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live to continue developing for decades longer. First produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the 1993 Grange represents over forty years of winemaking excellence. An earlier maturing vintage that's nevertheless rich and concentrated, very scented with apricot/camomile/dark berry/smoky aromas

Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

Grange is a unique Australian style, officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. When the late, great Max Schubert embarked on his odyssey to define the nation's ultimate red wine, his efforts were met by adversity and derision from peers. Today Grange is recognised as one of the world's great wines, each vintage is eagerly awaited round the globe. The small 2005 vintage release makes no quality compromise. A Grange that is balanced, firm and polished. The first sip welcomes, the second sip asserts, the third entreats submission
