Intensely spicy, raspberried, honeyed wine – incredibly fragrant – with cedar and cranberry scents frollicking throughout. These characteristics work better on the nose than they do in the mouth, yet still it’s as long and impressive as a freight train. Some will love this wine’s fleshy, warm sweetness, others may find it too oddball – but it’s in fine balance!" -Winefront.com.au, "One of my favorite vintages of Grange to actually drink at present is the 1982. The wine is gorgeously opulent and impossible to resist" -eRobertParker.com

Predominantly Shiraz with a small amount (6%) of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, Clare Valley, Magill Estate and Modbury near Adelaide. A very good vintage with a mild growing season, culminating in a burst of warm weather. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Alcohol13.50% Acidity 6.90g/L pH 3.39 "Deep dark red. A fresh, youthful aroma of slightly confiture-like blackberries, raspberries and plums is enhanced with sweet vanilla oak. Fresh, youthful and primary, the palate is intense and juicy, finishing fine-grained, elegant and smoky, with lingering flavours of mulberries and cedar. A finer, more elegant and restrained Grange" -JeremyOliver.com

Comments by Don Ditter: Very deep, rich brick red. Very ripe, sweet plum jam aromas. Vanilla and mint characters with a hint of leafiness. Masses of delicious super-fleshy fruit throughout, very elegant and supple but undeniably a full-bodied wine with an assertive tannin finish. "A vintage that Max Schubert called, in his low-key manner, "very good." This is a wine with an open-knit, seductive style. Dense ruby/purple with sweet black raspberry, jammy plum, and currant flavors, the wine tastes like dry vintage port, but also seems to be approaching full maturity. The wine seems low in acidity, sweet in tannin wiith the firmness, ripeness, richness, and powers of seduction" -eRobertParker.com

Grange 1994 represents an excellent offering from an above average vintage. Layers of massive Shiraz fruit and expertly crafted oak manifest themselves. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. "The wine, a blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows some toasty oak mixed with notes of root vegetables, damp earth, blackberry liqueur, prune, and licorice, layered and rich. I would not be surprised to see the rating on this wine improve as this youthful Grange continues to evolve!" -eRobertparker.com Feb 2002

A very great Grange, the mild and relatively dry growing season lead to a very successful vintage. This was the final release crafted by Max Schubert's successor Don Ditter. "A current as well as future legend, this has long been considered by Penfolds winemaking team as the greatest Grange of the 1980s. The wine is fleshy, massively concentrated, multi-dimensional with extraordinary power, beautifully integrated acidity, tannin, and alcohol, that seems to only occur in the greatest vintages. This is a Grange to kill for" -eRobertParker.com Feb 2002

Despite a difficult vintage, rigorous selection of intensely flavoured grapes from mature vines in some of the finest vineyards produced a wine that exceeded vintage expectations. "An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin!" -eRobertparker.com

Memorable for being the last of all vintages to be bottled in the original off-white foil capsules, and the first vintage to be bottled in magnums, nowadays there are usually six hundred magnum bottled each year. "The wine is deep ruby garnet with an unusual nose of root vegetables mixed with cola, caramel, black currant, and tar. Relatively attenuated in the finish, but sweet on the attack, this wine seems to be narrowing out, with the tannins becoming increasingly dominant. This is a vintage to monitor closely" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

One of the great strengths of Grange is that it does not rely on the performance of a single vineyard. Nowadays, only a few hundred Grange magnum arew bottled each year. 2003 produced Shiraz with dense colour, impressive varietal characters and soft tannins. "A beautifully seductive, richly concentrated wine which evokes the spirit of the Australian landscape, its natural affinity with Shiraz and Penfolds remarkable winemaking philosophy. Australians from all walks of life are extremely proud of this iconic wine and what it stands for!" -Andrew Caillard MW

Deep plum-red colour. Brooding nose of praline, plum and blueberry. Layered succulent and stylish full oak palate. Earthy fruit flavours of plum and chocolate and very rich chunky chewy tannins. Excellent balance and length!" -Winestate.com, "A massive wine, with cascades of potent plum, cherry and blackberry fruit swirling around wafts of black pepper, bay leaf and exotic spice, which last and last on the finish, hinting at smoky, meaty notes. It's all packed in tightly, suggesting this should evolve spectacularly with age!" -Winespectator.com
