By many accounts a superior vintage and a return to the past. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. "97 Points! Smooth, unctuous and exceptionally elegant for Grange, its voluptuous palate finishes with exceptional. The longer it’s opened, the silkier and more ethereal it becomes, as the quality of its fine-grained tannin becomes apparent. A classic reflection of a great cool vintage!" -JeremyOliver.com

Regular winter rainfalls ensured ideal soil moisture levels and healthy vine growth. Spring and summer temperatures were amongst the lowest on record, which reduced yield potential, as well as slowing overall crop ripening to a crawl. The 2002 growing season concluded with a warm, dry autum, which, combined with careful vineyard maangement, enabled the grapes to reach ideal ripeness. Grape variety Shiraz (99%), Cabernet (1%) Grange Bin 95 2002 was aged for fifteen months in new American oak hogsheads. At the other end of the Grange spectrum to its preceding release, purely as a result of two very different vintages. Alcohol 14.5% Acidity 6.9g/L pH 3.58

Deep, dark and impenetrable. A rich mix of dark chocolate aromas infused with coffee bean and black liquorice, then scents of tar, aniseed, raw (pure) soy and black olive. The palate is expansive, and yet finessed, balanced, highly defined, sleek. An amalgam of dark berried flavours and textural sensations, untapped flavour and structural precursors, 100% new oak is completely absorbed, meshed with ripe tannins, completing a palate of impressive length. "Deep, closed and brooding, with perfectly ripened aromas of dark berries, plums and typical smoky cedar/vanilla/dark chocolate Penfolds oak that become more fragrant with aeration, revealing scents of violets, cloves and cinnamon" -JeremyOliver.com

Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. Penfolds Grange displays fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

Penfolds renowned 2000 Grange is only the fifth vintage to be made from 100% Shiraz. It is also, atypically, 100% Barossa fruit. While it is not considered to be one of the great Granges, the 2000 exhibits outstanding potential, and is much more accessible than usual. One of the top wines I tasted from this vintage, its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet nose of blackberries. While this is no wimpy wine, it is an ideal example for readers who are unwilling to invest the patience required for the big, blockbuster Granges!" -Robert Parker Oct 2005

Considered an undistinguished vintage, it won a trophy, five Gold, four Silver and six Bronze medals between 1974 and 1982. "A good wine from an undistinguished vintage, it certainly was outstanding in June in Adelaide, showing a terrific nose of blackberry jam intermixed with sweet earth, plum, brown sugar, and tobacco. Full-bodied, deep, rich, and fully mature, this layered, concentrated, very fresh wine even exhibited some espresso-infused chocolate in the finish. It should drink well for another 5-7 years" -Robert Parker Feb 2002

Grange combines the intensity of superior Shiraz fruit, with the complementary nuances of new fine-grained American oak. The 1965 Grange, plainly labelled as Penfolds Claret won the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy, awarded to the best one-year-old red, the 1967 Grange won the same trophy two years later. This vintage also won two more Gold and six other medals between 1966 and 1973. Bottles from the 1965 vintage were labelled Bin numbers 69, 70, 71 and 95. A very autumnal style of Grange, with notes of mushrooms, and cedar

A meticulous regimen for vineyard selection, coupled with exacting winecraft, ensures each vintage of Grange displays a different character. "The best showing ever for this wine from my perspective, a relatively forward, accessible style of Grange. The color is still a dark plum/purple, and the wine shows plenty of sweet cassis, with notes of chocolate and toasty oak. The wine is opulent and luscious, with great intensity, full body, and fabulous extract. The acidity seems relatively low and integrated, and the tannins quite ripe!" -eRobertParker.com
